Abstract: Social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have become an established part of
everyday life for many – especially young – learners, as have memes (image + text), which are
created and posted, shared or, more precisely, published. This brings up the questions: Why should
memes be used in the lesson and how can teachers use these platforms and tools in the classroom to
increase learner motivation while also teaching the language and culture? The article shows
examples that were developed by students as part of portfolio assignments during the SoSe 2024. It
also highlights other ideas and benefits that teachers can use in their lessons.
Keywords: Memes, Motivation, Social media trends, TikTok
